Join us and help kids learn to read! It’s dedicated volunteers that make SIT STAY READ literacy programs so successful and we need you. With or without a dog, you can make a difference in the life of a child.

Volunteer Opportunities

Every SIT STAY READ program utilizes Book Buddies (reading tutors without a dog) and Dog Teams. Both roles give you the opportunity to help children learn to read and explore the world of books.

When you volunteer with your dog, you will function as a team, and work one-on-one with children as they read aloud to your dog.

If you volunteer without a dog, you may choose to:

  • Be a Book Buddy (read with children and assist with writing projects)
  • Help with dog training and tests
  • Promote SIT STAY READ at community events
  • Serve on a committee (Program; Fundraising; Marketing)
  • Assist with office projects

School programs are held Monday through Thursday, from 10-11AM, and require a one-hour per week commitment for eight weeks.

In addition, we have after school, evening, and Saturday volunteer opportunities. These community programs vary in length from 4-8 weeks and require a one-hour per week commitment. Demonstration programs are one-time volunteer opportunities and require a one-hour commitment.

Volunteer Requirements

Volunteers must complete the Volunteer Application, attend two training sessions and observe a program. In addition, before volunteering with your dog, you must be a Book Buddy for a minimum of three sessions.

Training consists of—Volunteer Orientation (must be completed first) and Literacy Training. You’ll find that our fun training sessions will make your volunteer experience more rewarding and you’ll be more effective at helping children learn to read.
