Welcome Harper to the SitStayRead Family as the new Volunteer Coordinator!

As Victoria begins her new role as Communications Manager at SitStayRead, we are excited to welcome Harper as our new Volunteer Coordinator! We're excited to announce the addition of Harper to our SitStayRead team, and are excited for them to head up all our volunteer activities and needs!

Learn more about Harper below:

Where are you from/where did you grow up?
I grew up on a small dairy farm in the northeastern plains of Colorado. In addition to milk, my family produced corn and wheat. I moved to Denver in 2012 to study English at Regis University. I lived in Denver for five years, and recently (like, really recently!) found myself in Chicago.

What brought you here?
Even though Colorado was familiar to me, I'd always felt like "home" was somewhere else. I came to Chicago earlier this year during my birthday, and I was really excited to be around so many people, and especially people who didn't look or live like all the people in Colorado. The culture where I'm from can be so homogenous at times, so this city is like a breath of fresh air.

Do you have any pets?
I have the sweetest little cat named Chicken. He's called that because he appeared one morning in my mother's chicken coop. When we found him, he was so small and hadn't even opened his eyes, and we had no idea where his family was. We took turns bottle-feeding him until he was healthy, and he came back with me to Denver. Chicken is so special and loves his new Chicago life. He is a great listener and loves to romp.

Interesting fact about yourself
I have never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!

What's one TV show you never miss?
I am the world's biggest fan of RuPaul's Drag Race.

You're creating your own Lollapalooza - what three bands headline it?
Charly Bliss, Girlpool, My Bubba

Favorite restaurant?
There's this wacky place in Denver called Sputnik that is so dark and grimy, but they make the best grilled cheese, and the bartenders take song requests if you're sweet to them. I always request the Monster Mash, regardless of the time of year.

What makes up your ideal Saturday afternoon?
I take a walk every day, so good weather and great scenery.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I love sharing food with friends, and it would be so neat to know every recipe off the top of my head. Not all heroes wear capes!

Favorite book?
Oranges are not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson.

What's your go-to karaoke song?
Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? By Shania Twain

Why SitStayRead?
I came to Chicago for personal reasons, and through a series of coincidences found myself on the SitStayRead website. Everything about my move to Chicago had felt very destined and meant-to-be, so learning about an organization that incorporated my passion for others, animals, and literature felt like an extension of that. I am very happy!
