SitStayRead welcomes Paz and Tanner Schools to its roster
CHICAGO - SitStayRead has added two elementary schools to its partner school family this Spring, Octavio Paz Elementary in the Little Village neighborhood and Henry O. Tanner Elementary in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.
"We are so excited to be able to bring both Tanner and Paz on as partners this year. At both schools, the administrations are incredibly supportive, the teachers are beacons of light and learning, and the kids are simply wonderful,” said SitStayRead Program Director Kate McIlvain. “We look forward to watching them grow from kindergarteners to third graders in the years to come!"
SitStayRead goes into Chicago Public School classrooms at no-cost, serving over 2,500 students in kindergarten to third grade annually with teams of human and Certified Reading Assistance Dog volunteers. With the addition of these two new schools, SitStayRead is serving 18 Chicago Public Schools where third graders are reading below the national average and students are living in economically-fragile households.
This spring, SitStayRead added one kindergarten program in both Paz Elementary and Tanner Elementary and plan to continue with Little Buddies (1st Grade) programs in each school next year.
“The appeal of SitStayRead for me was that it was not a one time visit, or even a one year program. The fact that the program builds each year for grade K to 3 is simply amazing to me. SitStayRead is the true definition of what a partnership is meant to be,” said Tanya Holliday, kindergarten teacher at Tanner Elementary. “What wonderful learning and memories these students will carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
SitStayRead is a nonprofit literacy organization whose mission is to advance children’s literacy skills using an engaging curriculum, dedicated volunteers, and certified dogs. Since 2003, SitStayRead has been serving Chicago Public School classrooms with an innovative dog-infused literacy program aimed at improving social emotional, fluency, and comprehension skills, as well as fostering a love of reading and writing that will last a lifetime.
